The Kannawidan Festival is one
of the many famous festivals in Ilocos Sur. This festival pays more attention
to the Ilocano Children because most Ilocano cultures are said to be not
recognized by younger generations in the province. The
province has a rich heritage and unique cultures that need to be preserved for
the next generations. However, many of these traditions, songs, dances, and
other Ilocano cultures were not already familiar to the younger generations due
to the influence of technology and the internet. So It is held not only to
thank the Almighty for the blessings and rich heritage but also to encourage the younger generation to learn indigenous songs and dances of the province
Ilocos Sur.
The festival showcases the rich heritage, tradition, culture, arts, crafts and delicacies of Ilocos Sur. It is a commemoration of the foundation
that lasts from the last week of January and ends in the first week of February.
This festival is a showcase of indigenous performances, religious rituals, as
well cooking demos featuring the best of Ilocano dishes. Another chance for people to gather and participate in the different fun activities.
This festival has become significant to every
Ilocano not only because of the commemoration of the founding of Ilocos Sur but
has also become a venue for them to showcase to the world the rich history and
culture of the Ilocano people. The Kannawidan Ylocos Festival drew local
and foreign tourists as more entertaining events had been included in the
celebration. This is another way of reviving the traditional practices that Ilocano elders passed.
It is important to maintain
this rich history and unique culture for future generations. And as part of that generation, we should try
and experience living with these traditions and cultures, we should treasure and
share them for the world to see.
